Today's colors from Sherwin-Williams™ Reflect Layers of Past

Experiment with new Upload Your Own Photo feature on online Color Visualizer

CLEVELAND (November 30, 2009) ― From enduring cultures to cherished heirlooms to vintage prints, the Sherwin-Williams Today’s Colors collection borrows cues from the past to paint the way to the future.

“In uncertain times, we find comfort in the memories and traditions that provide us with a sense of solid ground,” said Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. “Color plays a key role in triggering our nostalgia, and our Today’s Colors collection is a rediscovery of the styles, textures, patterns ― and hues ― of the past.”

The 24 colors selected by Sherwin-Williams color experts for Today’s Colors are grouped into four palettes: Rooted, Treasured, Simplified and Refreshed.

Wonder if the rich hues of Rooted can add character to your living room or if the refined Simplified palette can complement your master suite — before picking up a paint brush? Consumers can now get inspired and experiment with the entire Sherwin-Williams color spectrum by using the new Upload Your Own Photo feature on the Color Visualizer at sherwin-williams.com.

Rooted

Infused with the legacy of cultural artifacts such as handmade pottery and intricately woven textiles, this palette mixes the natural with the bold. Neutral options include earthy browns and a desert tan that are brought to life with a saturated, spicy red and a deep ocean blue. The palette is rounded out with a blackened purple, reflecting the mystique of the cultures at the heart of this collection.

“As today’s economy continues to shift our sense of stability and control, we’re seeing people turn to reliable and trusted elements of life, such as family and close circles of friends,” Jordan said. “Rooted represents this trend with colors that stem from tribal influences and evoke feelings of security and strength.”

Treasured

The time-tested tones of this palette evoke warm memories of times past. Many of the colors are muted shades of brighter tones, including a mellow coral that is a softer, retro alternative to its vibrant cousin. A neutral cream without too much flash centers the palette, while flaxen yellow adds a serene glow to the mix. A smoky blue layered with shades of gray and indigo mirror the deep stories of our past. The beauty of old, handmade artisan crafts is translated with a strong brown, and a faded verdigris adds a touch of green antiquity to the palette.

“By making savvy decorating choices, such as giving new life to flea-market finds, we complement our homes with the beauty of natural aging,” Jordan said. “And in our search, we’re often surprised and energized to find a beautiful palette of Treasured colors inspired by heirlooms.”

Simplified

In this tailored palette, calming whites set the foundation and grays ranging from mid-tone to dark also play an important role. This sophisticated palette also features a dash of charm with a buttery yellow and a muted shade of lilac.

“Simplified reflects the current trend to pare down the extravagancies in our lives, but still to decorate a well-dressed home,” Jordan said.

Refreshed

Fresh florals, sunny days and tropical blooms are the inspiration behind this palette. Get lost in a botanical blue and violet, and indulge in a sunshine yellow. A bright garden green, along with juicy grapefruit and tangerine, also add fun flavor to this spirited palette.

“The exuberant hues of Refreshed enliven the spirit and turn our focus to more carefree days,” Jordan said. “This palette reflects the optimism that can always be found within us, even as we navigate challenging times.”
