  1. 1

Once you've decided on your pattern, you'll want to clear the wall you'll be painting and lay down a drop cloth to catch any drips or spills. Prepare your pattern and determine where you want to place your lines.

  2. 2

Using your paintbrush, lay down the first color. For this project, we started with Lime Granita SW 6715. Extend your application past the area where your line will be. (In other words, paint an area that's a little larger than your final shape). If you are applying more than one coat, do so now.

Crisp paint lines can be difficult to perfect, especially when painting over old, plastered walls that have imperfections and uneven surfaces. In the following steps, we'll show you how to avoid paint bleeds and achieve precise paint lines.

  3. 3

Allow your first color to dry (here, Lime Granita SW 6715), then place your masking tape down inside your painted area. The outer edge of your masking tape indicates where your line will appear.

  4. 4

Using Lime Granita SW 6715 again, we then paint along the tape edge. Deliberately painting over the tape seals the edge with the first color, stopping the paint from bleeding into the second color.

Softly feather away the paint along the outer edge of the masking tape to avoid seeing a thick layer of paint later on.

  5. 5

Once the first color has dried, apply the second color. Make sure your paint overlaps the inner side of the tape line. After the second color has been applied, remove the tape by pulling it at a 90-degree angle.

For best results, remove the tape while the paint is still wet. If you decide to remove the tape after the paint has dried, you may want to use a craft knife and a straight edge to score the line before pulling the tape.

  6. 6

After you've finished applying your mountain pattern, decorate with whatever flourishes you choose. We used metallic silver adhesive decals to add dimension to our mountains.

Project Overview

Bring some joyful color and texture to any room by painting overlapping triangles in a coordinated palette to create a "mountain" wall. For greater dimension, add some metallic silver circles to your triangles.
