1. Decide on your style. I’ve worked with every budget for design, and I’ve learned that it doesn’t take that much time or money to make a sophisticated, bold impression in your home. It has everything to do with finding your style. Paint is an easy and affordable way to define your unique style and personalize your space on any budget.

2. Find color inspiration everywhere. The ColorSnap® Visualizer app is a great way to help you bring color into your home in big or small ways. Snap a photo of something that inspires you using the mobile app while traveling and match the colors to Sherwin-Williams colors, or simply upload a favorite photo and click on one of the colors from the image to match it. An accent wall in Adriatic Sea (SW 6790) or Parisian Patina (SW 9041) might remind you of your wonderful vacation every time you look at it. I'm inspired by seasonal color differences in the same thing— like the difference between a clear winter day sky blue and a clear summer day sky blue. The mood of a room is defined by subtle color decisions. Tradewind (SW 6218) is one of my favorite light blues for this reason; it adapts to the quality of the light.

3. Make one change at a time. You have one day? That’s still enough time to make simple changes that make a big impact. Spend your Saturday painting a front door! It’s a fun project that is actually relatively easy and hugely rewarding. Rather than a full makeover, small changes like this will make you will feel a sense of accomplishment, and give you the time to enjoy each improvement in your home one small change at a time. Something as simple and easy as painting your front door with SnapDry™, will make a bold impression in one hour with little effort.

4. Think outside the box and do something unexpected. Go ahead and flip the room upside down. Change the color of your ceiling. Paint the frame or even the face of a mirror. Create an ombré or chevron design on an accent wall. The opportunities with paint and color are endless and the more imaginative you get — the bigger, bolder impression you will make.

5. Change your perspective. Have something in your space that you can’t change? An awkward window, or a family antique you can’t get rid of? Rather than hide it, own it. Put it on display. Make small changes around it, like a bright floating shelf or billowy curtains. Small changes to something quirky will give your space character and instantly entertain your guests as they walk into the room. I once had a client who hated the large column in her dining/living room area. I designed a dining table that wrapped around it, cantilevering using the column as support. Success.
