How to Prep Walls for Wallpaper

Wallpaper is back in a big way, and there are now so many chic and stylish looks to choose from. No matter if you go with a pattern that's bright and bold or more subtle, start with a fresh, clean canvas to ensure a perfect application. Here's how to prep your walls for wallpaper.

Prep Walls

Before you begin adding wallpaper, you'll need to prep your walls. How you proceed depends on your wall's current condition.

New walls must be thoroughly cured, dry and primed.
For previously painted walls fill cracks or holes with patching paste, then sand smooth. Spot-prime the patches and prime all walls to be papered.
For walls with old wallpaper remove, patch, sand and clean. Be sure the old adhesive is gone and the walls are completely dry, then prime.

Tip: If you love the look but are nervous about the installation process, check out Sherwin-Williams' peel & stick wallpaper options. No water or paste needed and it's easy to remove or reposition.

Important! If your home was built prior to 1977, visit our lead paint information page before starting your project.

Paint Room

Once your walls have been prepped, you're ready to paint your room.

Paint the ceiling, windows, doors and trim, if needed. Paint 1-inch onto walls to avoid any gaps between the paint and wallpaper.

Once all painting is finished, you're ready to hang your beautiful wallpaper.
