How to Prep & Stain a New Wood Deck

Staining your new deck protects it from the elements & keeps its original shine. This how-to video from Sherwin-Williams makes it easy to prep and stain your deck for the first time.

Cost: $
Skill Level: Beginner
Duration: 1 day

STEP 1

Prep

Before you apply stain, wait 4-8 weeks after your new deck is built.

Start your project by sweeping away any leaves or other debris.

Tip: Not sure how much stain you need for your deck? Try our Deck Stain Calculator for a helpful estimate.

STEP 2

Test

Complete the water drop test. If the wood absorbs the droplets your deck is ready for stain.

STEP 3

Stain

Use a roller to apply an even coat of stain in the direction of the wood grain. Work the stain in with a brush.

Wait four hours between coats.

Allow the stain to dry for 24-48 hours before enjoying.

Tip: Before you apply stain, test on a small area and let it dry to ensure the color is right. If possible, avoid applying the stain in direct sunlight and try to pick a day where there isn't rain in the forecast.

Tip: Reapply stain every 12-48 months to keep your deck looking fresh.
