Yellow Paint Colors

Yellow is often thought of as a sunny color meant to brighten any room, but the psychology of yellow paint goes deeper. When used with care, yellow can stimulate mental activity and encourage communication. Strike the perfect balance with Sherwin-Williams’ selection of yellow hues.

How to Use Yellow Like an Expert

Choosing the Right Shade of Yellow

When choosing the right shade of yellow, consider your space. Do you have a lot of natural light or small windows of natural light throughout the day? Selecting a shade of yellow with a higher light reflective value (LRV) will make a room appear warmer, brighter and larger. However, in a space with a lot of natural light, yellow paint can be too saturated and attract bugs, mistaking your space for a giant flower.

What Yellow is Trending?

There’s no one popular shade of yellow, but most people gravitate toward mustard and pale-yellow hues. Mustard is a trendy yellow shade that offers the vibrance of a bold, true yellow without oversaturating the space. Kingdom Gold SW 6698 and Alchemy SW 6395 are beautiful, warm yellow shades perfect for a sitting room or accent wall.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, pale and muted yellows like They Call It Mellow SW 9015 and Convivial Yellow SW 6393 are calming and allow more cautious DIYers to dip their toes into more daring colors without having to make the new color the focal point.

What Colors Compliment Yellow Walls?

Nearly any color can complement yellow walls. It’s more important to find the right shade of yellow to complement the other colors in your space. Create a whimsical playroom with neon yellow and pale pink or create a bold kitchen with rich mustard and merlot hues. You can even make a calming space with soft yellow, rich wood brown and pops of light blue. Regardless of what shade of yellow you want to try in your home, there’s sure to be a color scheme to complement it.
