How to Design a Shared Space for Your Kids

If you are considering a shared space for your children, here are a few painting and design tips to make the most of a small space.

Set a Neutral Base scene

Set a Neutral Base

Choose a neutral underlying color palette for the larger elements of the room (walls, rugs, furniture) and let each child have a chance to express themselves by using smaller accent colors. This gives you a little control over the room's final look while still allowing each child some individual expression.

Let the Walls Speak for Themselves

Create an environment of creativity and self-expression. Paint an accent wall with our Sketch Pad® Dry Erase Coating and let the imagination of your kids fall outside the lines in a way that is all their own. The easy-to-use coating goes over almost any color and cleans with soap and water for whatever unique creation they choose to draw next.

Let Color Influence Behavior

If you're looking to add a bold color statement to your room, keep in mind how color can influence behavior. Shades of orange are said to encourage confidence and independence. Green is a calming color that may also improve a child's reading speed and comprehension and a cool color like blue can have a soothing effect.

Draw Boundaries

Sharing a room doesn't have to mean your children share everything. Help your children create appropriate separation through customized bookshelves, desks or toy bins. If you paint the shelves or desk with each child's signature color, they will each have their own defined space.
