How to Fix Cracked Paint

What Is Cracked Paint?

The splitting of a dry paint film through at least one coat. In early stages of peeking the problem appears as hairline cracks. In later stages flaking occurs.

What Causes It?

If you're seeing paint cracking or peeling on a wall or ceiling, here's what may have caused it:

  • Use of a paint that has lower adhesion and flexibility properties.
  • Over-thinning or over-spreading the paint.
  • Inadequate surface preparation, or applying the paint to bare wood without first applying a primer.
  • Excessive hardening and embrittlement of paint as it ages, causing the coating to lose the ability to expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes.

Solutions for Peeling Paint on Plaster Walls or Ceilings

  • To fix cracked paint, remove loose and flaking pieces with a scraper or wire brush. Then sand the surface and feathering the edges. If the flaking occurs in multiple layers of paint, you may need to use a spackling compound to create a uniform surface. Test the coating surrounding any peeled areas (around six to 12 inches out) to be sure the remaining adhesion is adequate.
  • Prime bare wood or plaster before repainting.
  • Make sure you are using enough paint for the size area you're working with. Apply the coatings at the recommended spreading rate (the recommended total area that can be painted) and using the recommended thinning rate (the recommended percentage that a coating may be diluted).
