How to Stain Concrete Patios

Transform your patio or walkway with concrete staining. Follow these three step-by-step instructions to stain any unstained concrete and enhance your space.

Step 1

Prep the Concrete

Prepare the surface by removing foreign substances. Scrape off any surface debris.

Step 2

Apply the Stain

When applying the stain, use two coats (according to label directions) of one of these products:

Step 3

Slip Resistance

For slip resistance, add H&C® SharkGrip® Slip Resistant Additive to the stain prior to application of the second coat. SharkGrip® will not change the color of the stain and should not be used in place of a non-skid finish.

Restaining?

Is your concrete patio already stained, and you’re looking to stain it a different color? Start by testing the concrete to see if it can be restained without removing the current stain. Look to see if water beads on the surface. If it doesn't, then you should be able to stain it a different color. Clean the surface with water and a concrete cleaner. Ensure that the surface has fully dried before following steps 2 and 3 above to apply your new stain.
