How to Paint a Fire Pit

A fire pit sets an ideal stage for evenings spent around a fire, sharing laughter and stories with friends and family. However, a weathered or dull fire pit can distract from the fun moments you're having. Thankfully, Sherwin-Williams is here to help you give your fire pit a well-deserved makeover, breathing new life into the centerpiece of your backyard hangout space. This guide will walk you through painting a fire pit, breaking down each step and providing pointers on choosing the right paint for metal exposed to high heat.

Can You Paint a Fire Pit?

The quick answer is yes; you can paint a fire pit. However, proper surface preparation and using the right paint are crucial for success. For instance, the surface should be clean and free of dirt and debris to allow the topcoat to stick. Additionally, you'll want to use a specially formulated, heat-resistant paint for a fire pit, like Krylon High Heat Max. This fire pit paint can withstand extreme temperatures while inhibiting rust and providing a protective layer from the outdoors, equating to more hangouts and less maintenance.

STEP 1

Sand & Clean Your Fire Pit

Preparing your fire pit before painting will ensure the topcoat adheres and performs as expected. Start by using sandpaper to remove chipping paint and rust while creating a textured surface to help the topcoat stick. Then, clean the fire pit with soap and water to remove any remaining debris. Once the surface has dried, apply painter's tape over any parts you want to protect from the paint, like electrical or gas components.

STEP 2

Apply Fire Pit Paint

The next step is applying fire pit paint in thin, even coats. To make the job quicker and easier, we recommend using Krylon High Heat Max spray paint. This paint offers incredible coverage and the ability to layer as many coats as your fire pit requires. If you prefer a brush to apply fire pit paint, use Krylon High Heat Max Brush-On.

Tip: The Krylon High Heat Max fire pit paint can withstand extreme temperatures but should not come in direct contact with flames or any other heat source..

STEP 3

Reassemble the Fire Pit & Enjoy

After the paint has dried, reassemble your fire pit and move it back to your desired location. Once in place, you can invite friends and family over to admire your craftsmanship and enjoy time around the fire!
