Setting the Tone for a Luxe Dining Experience in Boston

At La Padrona in Boston, Massachusetts, you’ll find a menu inspired by every corner of the Italian peninsula, craft cocktails, and an atmosphere that proves the importance and impact of thoughtful hospitality design and careful color selection.

Across the restaurant’s two levels, the designer’s vision created a cohesive vibe that connected to the spirit of Boston’s nightlife. “We had to make sure that the color was just right,” says Andres Lamos, associate and senior design manager of AvroKO, “and not just the right color, but also the correct finish so that we could play with the tonality of the space.”

Account Executive Rebecca Smith was able to help AvroKO achieve this with two beautifully moody key colors—Sommelier SW 7595 (276-C5) and Tricorn Black SW 6258 (251-C1)—and a mix of carefully chosen product technologies. Pro Industrial Waterbased Acrolon 100 delivered the high-gloss sheen on the ceilings, doors, and trim, with level 5 drywall finish for the smoothest application. Scuff Tuff Waterbased Enamel in Eg-Shel finish was the perfect choice for a durable finish on walls throughout the entire restaurant.

The final result is one that plays off of the space’s architectural lighting and sumptuous textures and enfolds guests in an unforgettable ambience. “Ultimately, Sherwin-Williams did an excellent job providing many, if not hundreds, of selections to help us pick just the right color and just the right finishes,” Lamos says.

Reimagining a Tiled Floor Design with Custom Terrazzo

The original flooring specified for the Kendall County administration building in Yorkville, Illinois, was meant to be a combination of grouted tile and epoxy terrazzo. But after weighing the options, a more cost-effective alternative was chosen: one-of-a-kind custom terrazzo blends of Sherwin-Williams High Reflective White SW 7757 (256-C1), In the Navy SW 9178 (253-C3), and Dovetail SW 7018 (244-C5).

Architectural Account Executive Susan Sienkowski and flooring sales representative Sebastian Sole aided in the color selection of this elevated mix of white, deep blue, and gray. From there, the flooring installer, CCI Flooring, got to work prepping, pouring, and polishing the final product until it was ready for years of use by the building’s occupants.

The High Performance Flooring team considered the client’s pricing and long-term maintenance expectations, and with the help of our High Performance Flooring Visualizer, they were able to demonstrate how beautifully the Resuflor Terrazzo TG System product could be used to closely mimic the look of an intricate tile floor design.

In addition to introducing the client to the long-term cost advantages, optimal durability, and beauty of Resuflor Terrazzo, the Sherwin-Williams team helped to streamline schedules and consolidate the flooring installation to a single contractor instead of the multiple specialists required with tiling.

Creating a Show-Stopping Facade for an Iconic Las Vegas Arena

It is no easy feat for an architectural firm to design a new building that will stand out on the Las Vegas skyline. But for the minds behind the concept for the new T-Mobile Arena, making an instant visual impact was nonnegotiable.

Designed by the architecture team at Populous to be an entertainment complex that would host everything from professional hockey games to live concerts and beyond, Las Vegas’s largest arena to date would include a 650,000 square-foot structure situated on a 16-acre site—and a truly ambitious plan for the exterior, inspired by the majesty of both the Las Vegas Strip and the surrounding desert landscape.

The locale’s urban energy was embodied by a sprawling glass façade with an LED video mesh overlay interlacing the exterior balconies, and the surrounding natural landscape was echoed in bowed bands made of more than 100,000 square feet of custom-fabricated metal shingles. These enormous panels were given a gilded, shimmering-mirage effect with durable Sherwin-Williams Fluropon® Classic II coating, which is formulated to stand up to harsh weather conditions and maintain resistance against chalking, fading, and UV rays.

To achieve the final look, nine total coating colors were used to match initial concept images, derived from the three completely custom shades composing the metal bands: Flaxen Gold, Titan Gold, and Chestnut. Robert Norvell, the associate principal architect on the job, communicated how difficult it was to formulate the subtle color change the team envisioned—and just how satisfied they were with the end result. “Not only are the coatings visually pleasing,” the architect says, “but they’re also extremely functional and will maintain that richness of color.”
