Color, TLC and Emerald™ Exterior Paint were the key ingredients in the repaint of a historic 8,000 square foot Victorian mansion in Wilton, Iowa.

Proper Prep and Priming

Last painted three years ago for a fast sale, the home required a lot of surface preparation before even an ounce of coatings was applied.

“It was really more of a restoration than a repaint,” says Matt Harris, owner of Custom Painters in Wilton. Paint was flaking off in large pieces, leading Harris to believe that the home had not been pressure washed before the last repaint. Most of the framing pieces in the screened-in porch were shattered, and several sections of the wood siding on the house had rotted. Custom Painters spent two days pressure washing the entire exterior, then replaced all missing wood and rotted boards. The house was then caulked with 950A Siliconized Acrylic Caulk, a product preferred by Matt’s father, Randy, for its ease of application and workability. Then it was time to pick a primer.

“At first we recommended a wood preservative, slow-drying oil primer, but Matt wanted a quicker turnaround on the topcoat,” says Nick Heinrich, manager of the Sherwin-Williams store in nearby Muscatine, Iowa. Designed to be ready to recoat in just one hour, Fast Drying Primer provided a perfect solution. In addition, the primer contains a stain-killing sealer and is formulated to assure a uniform topcoat appearance. Matt had used Fast Drying Primer in prior projects and liked the coverage and bonding he got with the product when repainting bare wood siding with a lot of rusty nails present.

Careful Color Considerations

During the prep and priming phase, the homeowner worked closely with Custom Painters and Sherwin-Williams to select a new color scheme that would restore the classic beauty of the home.

They started with the colors found in the foyer floor tiles, figuring they would have been based on the home’s original color scheme. After much trial and error and test painting, they settled on a combination of six colors including Coastal Plain (SW 6192) on the siding and Contented (SW 6191) on the third-story fish scale shingles, with Sommelier (SW 7595), Forestwood (SW 7730) and Blonde (SW 6128) as accent colors. Extra White (SW 7006) was also used on the awnings and porches.

Randy Harris’ experience as a paint color and faux specialist was particularly valuable when making the final decisions on where to apply the various colors.

Finishing Touches… and Future Plans

Once the colors were selected, it was time for the all-important topcoat choice. For a large residential project with such a complex color scheme, Matt wanted to guarantee his customer the longest-lasting and best-looking finish possible.

“Emerald™ Paint was an easy choice,” he says. “We had tried out this new Sherwin-Williams product on other jobs as soon as it was released and really liked the results. It has great hide and we love the way it levels with a roller or brush. Hands down, it’s the best paint we’ve ever used.”

Other than using a Graco® Ultra Max II 695 airless sprayer to ensure the best coverage of the fish scale shingles, and a 4-inch mini-roller on the first coat of the larger siding sections, they used a brush on most of the house. The extreme detail work of the large wrap-around porch alone required a full month of work, and the house still has old-fashioned storms and screens, which all had to be painted.

In the end, Custom Painters worked on the home for a total of 11 weeks, with a crew of between one and five people on the site at all times. The job required 65 gallons of Emerald™ Paint, 20 gallons of Fast Drying Primer and 10 cases of 950A caulk.

“The colors have been real fun to work with, and we really have to give credit to the homeowners for their willingness to take our advice and use the new Emerald paint,” Matt says. “And, from product recommendations to job site visits, our Sherwin-Williams store manager Nick Heinrich and sales rep Nick Hampton really helped make this job easier. Any questions we had, any time of day or night, they were there with answers.”
