How to Prep & Stain a Painted Deck

Keep your deck protected from the elements and looking fresh. Prepping and staining your painted deck is easy with this how-to video from Sherwin-Williams.

Cost: $
Skill Level: Beginner
Duration: 1 day

STEP 1

Prep

Sweep away any leaves or other debris.

STEP 2

Test

Complete the water drop test. If the wood absorbs the droplets your deck is dry and ready for you to get started.

STEP 3

Clean

Apply cleaner with a pump sprayer or watering can and wait 15 minutes.

Mist with a garden hose to keep wet, then scrub away any remaining residue.

Wash away the cleaner and let your deck dry.

STEP 4

Stain

Use a roller to apply an even coat of stain in the direction of the wood grain. Work the stain in with a brush.

Wait four hours between coats.

Allow the stain to dry for 24-48 hours before enjoying.

Tip: To guarantee an even application, avoid direct sunlight and apply stain on a day when the temperature is between 50 and 90 degrees. Double check the forecast to make sure there's no rain in the coming week.
