Paisano Green is raising the bar for environmentally-conscious public housing.

"It's really a blueprint on how things should be done, from design to construction and the quality of life it offers to residents while being environmentally friendly,” says Marty Howell, Sustainability Manager for the city of El Paso.

Opened in June 2012, the Paisano Green Community was developed by the El Paso Housing Authority as an energy-efficient 73-unit complex for senior citizens. Equipped with features like wind turbines, rooftop solar panels and air-source heat-pump water heaters, it’s one of the nation’s most advanced green projects. All energy consumed will be generated on site, and no fossil fuels will be burned at the complex. The complex is expected to receive LEED® Platinum and Enterprise Green Communities certification.

“The project includes many sustainable design features that focus on energy efficiency, accessibility, indoor air quality, durability and livability for the residents,” says Dan McDowell, the project manager for Pavilion Construction, the general contractor on the project. “As a part of this, the project requires high quality low- or no-VOC paints.”

ProMar® 200 Zero VOC Interior Latex and ProMar® 200 Zero VOC Primer were specified to ensure that the coatings complied with Green Seal GS-11 requirements. The eg-shel topcoat was specified for the walls, with semi-gloss used on the trim.

“Our crews really like using the new ProMar® 200 Zero VOC line of products,” McDowell says. “The paint goes on smooth, has little to no smell, good hide, and great touch-up. I highly recommend for all new construction jobs.”
