Terrazzo Portraits at The Ohio State University

Terrazzo has been a favored flooring for over a century, long revered for its visual impact and its impressive longevity. In The Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center, home to the Buckeyes hockey and basketball teams, 71,000 square feet of Sherwin-Williams terrazzo flooring features larger-than-life portraits of former student athletes in an award-winning display of artistic skill and expert installation by The Ardit Company.

The impressive feat captures remarkably fine details in red and various shades of gray terrazzo that will immortalize the school’s legacy of athletic achievement for generations of OSU students and visitors to come and earned it the Job of the Century award from the National Terrazzo and Mosaic Association. Sherwin-Williams protective & marine coatings were also used on “the Schott’s” walls, metal door frames, and more.

A New Finish for Truly Timeless Wood Flooring

Nydree Flooring manufactures high-performance, acrylic-infused wood flooring for commercial and residential applications, providing beautiful flooring that must withstand the heavy foot traffic of homes, hotels, restaurants, and offices. The Virginia-based and family-owned business began working with Sherwin-Williams to refine their color selection with help from a personalized palette assessment to enhance appeal for their target market.

Nydree Flooring also entrusted their flooring’s protective finishes to Sherwin-Williams, using a custom balance of MarGuard and TaberMax abrasion-resistant products to enhance the wood’s scratch and dent resistance. The UV-cured finishes also help achieve the desired gloss level safely without emitting volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

An LA Apartment Building Receives the Royal Treatment

Multi-family housing can demand unique design and architectural considerations based on location, demographic details, and more. For the creators of King 1101 Apartments in South Los Angeles, Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, this meant specifying the ideal colors and coatings to provide a high level of comfort for low-income residents who had previously experienced housing insecurity and homelessness.

With a mind for both contemporary aesthetics and energy efficiency, high-performance Fluropon® by Sherwin-Williams Coil Coatings was selected to coat the cool roof—which reflects solar heat and provides exceptional resistance to ultraviolet (UV) radiation—and façade wall cladding systems in the beautifully luminous Linen White color, serving the dual purpose of creating curb appeal and supporting the project’s goals for a LEED® Gold certification.

Powder Coatings Open a Window on the World in Jersey City

The Lenox, a 255-unit residential structure with several apartments overlooking the Manhattan skyline, required window types and technologies to rival the building’s stunning views. Marchetto Higgins Stieve and the Fields Hi-Rise Construction company joined forces and tapped Crystal Window & Door Systems to supply the project’s 2,000-plus windows.

Sherwin-Williams Powdura® 5000 in bronze and black was used to coat the windows, doors, and louvers, meeting AAMA 2605 requirements—meaning these elements successfully satisfied standards for moisture, weathering, ozone and UV radiation resistance. Owing in part to this product’s near-zero VOCs and low-waste application, The Lenox has since been LEED® Silver certified and continues to be a desirable residence in the Paulus Hook neighborhood.

Efficient and Economical Fireproofing for a Seattle High-Rise

Seattle’s 303 Battery apartment complex is the first high-rise in the world designed to meet net-zero energy standards established by the International Living Future Institute—producing 105% of the energy it consumes. To achieve this, designers needed to find the optimal coatings to protect, fireproof, and improve the appearance of the building’s architecturally exposed structural steel.

They selected Firetex® FX9502 from Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings to meet the project’s needs for speed, economy, and environmental friendliness. This intumescent product required lower installed thicknesses compared to other coatings with faster application and curing times, plus significantly lower costs. To further boost aesthetics, the application shop—Seattle-based Puget Sound Coatings—also applied an aesthetic topcoat of Sher-Loxane® 800, another Sherwin-Williams product, on any visible steel.

This is just a small sample of the kinds of projects that prove how Sherwin-Williams is your one partner for every project, simplifying the specification process by offering a comprehensive range of coatings for every type of product from start to finishes.
